How it Started

C. D. Merz was interested in anything electrical from a young age, his toy box was filled with wires, sockets and switches. His Father worked as an engineer for Western Electric. In high school Craig met a friend, Frank E. Thompson, who had assembled his own Hi-Fi system from scrounged parts. This sparked an interest in electronics and with Frank's help, Craig started to build his own Hi-Fi equipment. After high school it was six years in the Army working as a field radio technician with duty tours in Greenland and Vietnam.

After the Army years, it was on to Western Electric in the test set construction department in Burlington NC. This facility was mainly devoted to the Nike missle program as well as some telephone work. The three years spent at Western Electric provided good experience in building electronic equipment. In 1972, Craig went on to the servicing and start-up of industrial electronic equipment, primarily working with DC and AC variable speed drive equipment, first with Reliance Electric Co. and later as a private contractor.

As the new century approached, Craig started to work more on his first love of building audio equipment that continues on today. His early experience learning from his friend, the excellent Army training as well as the industrial training at Reliance gave him the basis for starting his own experimentation with different ways of arranging wide range audio circuitry.
